(incl. quatrains IX 53 and III 53)

Nero succeeded oddball Claudius, his step-father, to be the Roman Emperor for AD54-68. (The 68 succession from Nero was bloody and 69 became the Year of the Four Emperors, poor Roman Empire.) Claudius had died of poisoning and Nero had became Emperor at age 17. (Agrippina, mother of Nero and current wife of Claudius, may have poisoned her husband for fear of him favouring his natural son Britannicus.) In AD55 Britannicus died over dinner (probably because Nero had him poisoned). In AD59 Agrippina was brutally assassinated apparently for speaking ill of Nero’s girlfriend.

After that, with Nero spiralling out of control, Saul/Paul chose to come proselytizing in Rome. Leading Jewish Jesus Worshippers Paul, Peter and James were all executed AD60-68 although in just a few decades the Bible would be a closed book and gentile Christianity became fundamentalized. (And later – suitably transformed from extreme pacifism to legalized violence so as to rally the troops around an invincible banner image – it would become the Imperial Religion of the Roman Empire.)

Back in 68AD, two legions and the Praetorian Guards rose up against Nero and he fled from Rome. The senate declared Nero, who was the the last Julio-Claudian emperor and in direct descent from Augustus, a public enemy as a result of which he committed suicide (state-assisted?) aged 30.

Under the Section NERO-LIKE DICTATORSHIPS in the Article

I wrote, “This comparison is delivered as a serious aside in some quatrains. Emperor Nero got the bad press he deserved although it has probably been inaccurately detailed. Tacitus, who showed disgust at all political manipulations of language and severely criticized Rome for having fallen from the virtuous strength of the old Republic, denied that ‘Nero fiddled while Rome burned” and emphasized the good works of the Emperor in providing relief, offering the palace as a homeless shelter and making new and advanced urban plans (a little like Sir Christopher Wren). However, he did not actually deny that Nero started the fire and emphasized Nero’s vain brand of cruelty and his horrific handling of the ‘Chrestians’ problem. (It is said that the Hebrew numeric value of 666 applies to the name ‘Neron Kesar’ and in Aramaic it is also 666 and ‘Nero Caesar’ in Latin makes up the alternative Bible reference of 616 – the quoted numbers of the Beast in different editions of Revelation – but I have not checked these for proof yet.)”

Was Nero (Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus) the candidate for ‘antichrist’ pre-figured as 666 by the Bible or was he more like London’s Sir Christopher Wren in 1666?

Clearly we are all social system-izers producing and in part produced by laws, practices, ecology and the familial-cultural norms. It follows that any kind of psychological personality judgement should be anchored in the environment of that person’s lifetime and their society. Can we then strech personal comparisons across centuries? A comparison with Nero is delivered as a serious aside in several Nostradamus quatrains. Here we are dealing with a ‘young Nero’. Is this to mean ‘like Nero when he was very young’ or ‘the youngest among the Nero’s’ (possibly Nostredame’s three Antichrists of quatrain VIII 77 at the age each comes into their own) or ‘a young man who reminds us of Nero’?

When Nostredame uses ‘jeune/ieune’ he often means to identify by age one of a pair or group, famously ‘Le lyon jeune’ which opens quatrain I 35 (argued convincingly by many at the time as a striking prophecy of the seemingly unforeseeable death-by-duel of Henri II, yet Nostredame never confirmed this). Or the ‘Ieune ogmion’ of
IX 89 in the final section of the Article THE LATE DOLORES CANNON’S ‘ANTICHRIST ACCORDING TO NOSTRADAMUS’. Or the ‘Ieune noir rouge’ in Nostradamus Quatrains VI 25 and V 81 THE MAGPIE OF PEACE.

Literally the youngest Minister of Defence in the world is Mohammad bin Salman Al Saud, born 1985, the Saudi motivator behind Operation Decisive Storm, an offensive against dedicated Houthi rebels in neighbouring Yemen who had been promised power and took it when it was subsequently withheld. (See the Article END-TIME NOSTRADAMUS SERIES (4) Q’RANIC CONCEPTS and its Yemen footnote) Of course the space-age US is directing the Saudi/Emirate aerial onslaught on a desparate land. Yet the deathtoll of Houthi-Yemeni soldiery is surprisingly small – the latest news is that bombers are being guided-in on small private houses, having flattened most everything else. (At least 5,300 Yemenis have died, we find.) The spectacle is that of the miltarily greatest and richest Arab powers levelling a much poorer Middle Eastern place and its people, already diminished from within for decades previously, in order to restore a ‘puppet president’ who is mostly unwanted by the populus and was retired once already.

Le Neron ieune dans les trois cheminees
Fera de paigesvifz pour ardoir getter,
Heureux qui loing sera de telz meneees,
Trois de son sang le feront mort guetter.

Line 4 OF ‘feront/faire’ or ‘seront/être’? (The typeface is the same for ‘f’ and ‘s’.) The latter would give us something like “Three of his blood will be ambushed to death” which seems quite normal for Nero’s lifetime (but I favour the other choice below). One way or another his step-father, mother and half-brother all died suddenly and unexpectedly. There is a vague possibility that ‘seront’ might have been a mistaken ‘siéront’ derived from OF ‘seoir’ which would have them all obliged to be seated at the time (possibly true).

OF ‘guetter’ watch/ambush (in the field of duty: monitor, observe, surprise) has a trio of possible contenders for misdictation/mishearings during hotprint typefacing, which I feel sure happened at times although here I list merely my fancy: ‘guéer’, wade, ‘guérir’, ensure, ‘guêtré’, the (gaitered) city watch.

Translation 1:
The young Nero shall have living pages thrown
To be burnt in the three fireplaces:
Happy those who shall be far from such schemings!
Three of his kin/his own kind shall place him in fear of his life.

Of course in Washington DC they have both White House chimneysweeps and pages to serve the senators. The sweeps for the many chimneys are selected periodically by a superior chimneysweeps association and will work hard for little, proud to be considered good enough to enter high places on an intimate basis. Boy and girl pages are similarly selected. Washington insiders have witnessed dirt on the sack, we’re often told by well-intentioned rumour-mongers.

Or are these the kinds of pages found in books? Extremists are keen on book burnings:

“I am nothing more than a reminder to you that you cannot destroy truth by burning pages!”

as spoken by reviled librarian Romney Wordsworth in The Twilight Zone USA TV series scripted and produced by Rod Serling: see a transcript of episode ‘The Obsolete Man’ at

Here is the beginning of it, foreshortened a little with minor paraphrasing by me. (I make no apology for swapping out names as the noble thrust of the original is a universal one, for all of humanity to ponder and for all time. Thank you Rod Serling):

We find ourselves in the courtroom of a totally tyrannical State with the ‘Chancellor’ character as its leading spokesperson and persecutor of all useless eaters (think Henry Kissinger).

A TV narrator sets the scene:

“This is not a new world: It is simply an extension of what began in the old one”

Chancellor: You are obsolete, Nostredame!

Nostredame: A lie, no man is obsolete!

Chancellor: You have no function, Monsieur. You’re an anachronism, like a ghost from another time….

Michel de Nostredame: I am nothing more than a reminder to you that you cannot destroy truth by burning pages!

Chancellor: You’re a bug, Mister Nostradamus. A crawling insect. An ugly, misformed, little creature, that has no purpose here, no meaning!

Michel: I am a human being …

Chancellor: You’re a dealer in books and pamphlets in a musty language factory that spews meaningless words on an assembly line. WORDS, Monsieur Michel, WORDS that have no substance, no dimension, like air, like the wind, like a vacuum, that you make believe have an existence by scribbling out index numbers.

Michel: I don’t care. I tell you: I don’t care. I’m a human being, I exist….and if I disseminate one thought wisely that thought lives, even after I’m shovelled into my grave.

Chancellor: Delusions, Nostradamus, DELUSIONS!! that you inject into your veins with printer’s ink, the narcotics you call literature: The Bible, poetry, essays, all kinds, all of it are opiate to make you think you have a strength, when you have no strength at all!!! You are nothing, but spindly limbs and a dream, and the coming world has no use for your kind!!!!

Some fairly modern states do in fact maintain clandestine departments of fey prognostication whilst others maintain low-profile but high-tech predictive programming machines fed daily with new data inputs. Either way, some words are here to stay but not all should totalitarianism be allowed to fulfill its global promise. (Really we need more words in English, not less, because all of the spiritual expressions we have inherited are either lacking in depth or deeply ill-fitting.)

So far I have chosen to follow the most common, if not the only, English-language interpretations of OF ‘paiges/pages’ and OF ‘adoir getter’ employed by our learned Nostradamus researchers to date. Two differing translations/interpretations now follow. Translation 2 is a small but meaningful alternative to the commonly embedded translation, Translation 3 rewrites the record altogether.

Translation 2:
The young Nero shall have/make sailors suddenly tossed
To be burnt alive in the three furnaces:
Happy those who shall be far from such schemings!
Three of his kin, his own kind, shall place him in fear of his life.

Line 1. The Sixteenth Century ‘sera/fera’ typeface problem in the ‘Opera Nostradamus’ is discussed throughout this website, case by case. Whereas ‘fera’ should normally take a direct object, ‘sera’ may or may not do so. OF ‘avoir’ is many-faceted. The intransitive form of the verb would not lead directly to the stated result but rather, in a sense, allows that the subject is comfortable with or willing to tolerate that result. Here that would suggest a deep criticism of this entirely Nero-like lack of empathy, humanity and shame.

In Medieval France a page was usually a boy chosen from a family associated with nobility.

If Nostredame means literally the young Nero then are these ‘pages’ the three Apostles – select males who serve their King – crucified by Nero but later sainted by the Roman Church? Perhaps not. The obscurantism of Nostredame is connected foremost to his own world and secondly to all our tomorrows. He had no need to obscure history already past, excepting it be cloaked by dangerous propaganda whereby the truth begets social rejection.

OF ‘getter’ is probably OF ‘jeter’. It had a miscellany of meanings including imprinting/implanting something from a distance. Another is ‘to throw someone’. (See Translation 1.) But it can also mean to impel forwards over a distance or be impelled by an impulse such as an explosion producing a sudden movement out of one’s place, a knocking forward and down. It could also mean to propel a projectile. Or to melt, sinking into a mould. Attached to direction it could mean travelling directly to some spot. Otherwise, to perform an action with a part of the body. Or simply to emanate forcefully.

OF ‘paige/page’ had the same two meanings as in English plus a distinct variation. It was a young boy of good family employed as a ‘young butler’ in household service or one side of a sheet of paper or parchment (which by a metonymic usage could represent a book, a story). The third meaning was a young sailor. A triple funnelled steamship comes to mind.

See the Nostradamus Quatrain VIIII (IX) 100 FIRE AT SEA

Actually the Lusitania had four very distinctive funnels but for economy only three engine-rooms were fired-up on her fatal voyage making her incapable of outrunning U-boats (which inherent ability had been the promise to nervous prospective customers by the Line Commodore William Turner who personally captained the ship through the “Berlin Decree” war-zone). The German government even took out pages in many US newspapers warning that Allies’ sea passengers would be travelling at their own risk. The regular captain Daniel Dow had defaulted for fear of his life. Even so a naval escort was not provided.

Is Nostredame saying that this 1915 sinking was suspiciously deliberate – today we might wonder if a false flag was ordered-up to persuade one nation to go to war and plural nations into the sustainable fury of a hate war – and that the regular Captain had somehow glimpsed what was intended for the Lusitania? (Most wars today are planned attacks on mineral rights, actually, but are ever sold to the general public as hate wars.)

Argument continues as to exactly how the great ship was sunk. Torpedo warfare was relatively new. The loss was plumped by propaganda pushes on both sides. Philadelphia’s Evening Public Ledger carried the heading

“British Officially Find Submarines Sank Lusitania”

and it quotes,

“The whole blame for the catatrophe was solely upon those who plotted and committed the crime”

A very interestingly unambivalent and yet ambiguous conclusion indeed! The Germans issued a number of commemorative medallions including the popularly welcomed ‘Goetz’. (Lettered into Line 3, as it happens.) They were marked “uber alles” as usual. Suitably sick, they depicted a busy skeleton serving tickets to hastening travellers from behind a Cunard booking-office grill. Yet they do not claim to be the perpetrators of, merely the winners by, that sad event. Noting these popular medals to be claiming a backhanded victory the British Government then ordered 250 thousand exact replicas to be issued as a stirring show of disgust!

On board the steamer when it sailed from New York were three Germanic males hiding in a crew pantry. They were arrested by Detective Pierpoint of Liverpool constabulary who was disguised as a (First Class) passenger. Locked away, they were lost presumed drowned when the ship went down off Ireland. Another loss was Neal Leach who could speak German and was suspect as he had been interned in Germany at the beginning of WWI but released. On his return to the US he had been met by known German agents.

(Both the names Pierpoint and Neal Leach are available simultaneously from the jumbled letters of the First Couplet. We should not normally expect to find nouns containing the letter ‘w’ – see “the 7T’s” section on the HOME page – but Daniel is hiding in Line Three and Turner in Line 4. Liverpool may be lettered from the First Couplet and Lusitania from the Second Couplet. ‘Goetz’ is in Line 2 and ‘medaille’ is in Line 3. ‘Germanie’ is in Line 4. The OF ‘décret’, decree, and a possibly not-so-OF ‘zone de guerre’ are available from Lines 1 and 3. There are so many nouns/names that we could associate with this tragedy. Perhaps it is not always fitting to play word-games.)

1,201 folk perished including 128 Americans. The world turned against Germany for murdering these civilians, many of whom were in the double-booked and overcrowded Second Class Cabins. ‘RMS’ Lusitania was an expensive ship to run. Despite a ‘superior’ or ‘snooty’ passenger list the First Class accomodation was half empty. Leslie the look-out boy said he saw two trails of bubbles and exclaimed ‘torpedoes’. The log of the condemned U-boat recorded firing one torpedo only. Perhaps there was more than one submarine involved. The damage was incommensurate with one torpedo strike and there were very violent explosions below decks subsequently. A mystery.

There were three stoked furnaces, drowned matelots and three German spies who were kith and kind to those German submariners who took all the blame – and all the glory calls – for over a thousand innocent deaths. Close enough?

Now here’s the approach path to my third translation:

OF ‘cheminée’ meant either the path that one travels or a fireplace (chimney) for evacuating smoke. It could also be a ladies pyramidal hair-do. Interestingly the OF verb ‘cheminer’ is to make one’s way forward and figuratively it meant to make progress at something. (Are ‘cheminees’ progressives, progressions or pilgrims?) At sea or on water OF ‘cheminée’ would mean simply whatever comes next, all watery advance being wave-by-wave.

OF ‘ardoir/hardoir’ (which gave us the modern noun hardware) was any location where dogs are kept leashed. The common and much repeated translation of OF ‘ardoir’ as ‘burn’ or ‘set on fire’ – an English ‘tradition’ which I followed dutifully for the sections on Translations 1 and 2 – is probably from the old Occitan word ‘ardre’ of that meaning.

In other words, Anglo-American interpreters have followed each other in translating, originally by over-modernized adaptations, what in modern Fr. reads something like

Le jeune Nero aura jeté pages
Pour être brûlé vif dans les trois cheminées:
Heureux ceux qui sont loin de ces intrigues!
Trois de son sang le feront mort guetter

whereas a little more research into OF ‘ardoir’ might have produced, in modern Fr., something more like

Le jeune Nero dans les trois cheminées
Fera les pages animée par les poussant dans la fourrière,
Il ya ceux qui sera loin d’être heureux avec un tel plan,
Trois de son sang le feront mort guetter.

which seems somewhat closer in meaning to the original OF text. I will close this webpage by offering my true departure from the normal English-language recitation:

Translation 3:
At the three ways OR At the three chimneys the young Nero Will make lively the pages by pushing them into the dog-pound,
There are those who will be far from happy with such a plan,
Three of his blood will have him ambushed to death.

The fair assumption that ‘Nero’ is the ‘him’ in Line 4 ensures that the true identity of ‘Le jeune Nero’ does remain a mystery still although he certainly comes to a comparable end to the historical Emperor Nero. Apart from my earlier suggestions accompanying Translations 1 and 2, I now find in the First Couplet a hint of the persecution of Christians (thrown to the animals) for which Nero must forever hold pole position. Is ‘pages’ a code for Apostles/Saints or simply book bearers?

The Roman games had gutwrenching gladitorial contests, fights with fiercely strong-jawed animals from all around the empire and horrifically spectacular criminal executions especially of Christians who won crowds over with their unfaltering and even animated and vocal courage. In fact the subsequent swelling of the Christian cause exactly matched the shrinking popularity of these ‘games of slaughter’.

The English particle ‘ord’ imbues the meanings way, path or pathway much like OF ‘chemin’. (For instance, ordained means entered upon a path, ordinance follows a trajectory: ‘Chemin de Fer’ is the Iron Road or railway. ‘Chemin de Compostelle’ is the pilgrim’s way to Compostella.) Are ‘les trois cheminées’ then three separate ways forward or maybe a triple conjunction – combining three elements, three dimensions or three personages much like a trinity? (To find the letters of OF word ‘trinité’ jumbled inside ‘trois cheminées’ requires only the anagramic mechanism, customary during the time of Nostradamus, of the duplication of one letter.)

Although he deserves a bad press, Nero is getting an improved response recently and he seems to have been acquitted as the arsonist who burnt down Rome. But his personal life screams Narcissist! and Psycopath! and in his elevated position his personal life and affairs of state were highly intermingled so making Sociopath! unavoidable as well. In fact as an all-round Imperial leader he proved rather pathetic into the bargain. But the psycho suffix ‘-path’ is a modern popular one more than a scientifically accurate one. Fratricide, matricide, uxoricide and plain homicide have all been suspected of him, so why not suicide? Nero’s half-brother, his mother and one of his wives (as well as another wife’s previous husband) all died brutally because of him, like pages ripped from the book of names. Doubtless the Middle Ages found him plain wicked, evil even.

I think the inclusion of ‘retro-prophecies’ in the Centuries is justified should the particular quatrain reflect a vision by Nostredame that conveys more information than history records and this seems to be the fact. Here it may be in the line ‘Three of his kin/his own kind shall place him in fear of his life’ or its alternative interpretation, ‘Three of his blood will have him ambushed to death’. Was Nero Ahenobarbus ‘suicided’?

Finally one ‘Aggripine’, almost the name of Nero’s mother Agrippina, features in the quatrain

III 53

1555 Lyon Bonhomme

(an identical text is in all the Sixteenth Century editions for which I have seen copies)

Quand le plus grand emportera le pris
De Nuremberg d’Auspurg, & ceulx de Basle
Par Aggripine chef Francqfort repris
Transuerseront par Flamans iusques en Gale.

When the greatest one will win the prize
Of Nuremberg from Auspurg, and those of Basle
Through ‘Aggripine’ take against the chief of Frankfort
Tranversing through the Flemings territory until in Gaul.

Once we are into the Flamands/Vlamingens/Flemings we are in Flanders which today sees three flags for three ways – the Netherlands , Belgium and France – and has always suffered disputes as to what is Flemish exactly, be it by politics, peoples or languages (Walloons, Hainuyers, Picards). We also get treated to the OF proper noun ‘Aggripine’.

Today ‘Agrippine’ is a fairly unusual French female name. In AD49 the Roman Emperor Claudius married his niece Agrippina the Younger, daughter of his brother Germanicus. Another Agrippina was a daughter of Augustus and the mother of Caligula. A little known Saint Agrippina lived at the time of Emperor Valerian, Third Century AD.

The wife of Germanicus was Vipsania Agrippina, VIP daughter of Agrippa and known retrospectively as Aggripina the Elder. One of their many children was named Nero. He was the most likely successor to Emperor Tiberius but was accused with his mother of treason and exiled to the isle of Ponza where he seems to have starved to death or killed hisself (suicided?) Another was Agrippina the Younger, mother to Emperor Nero (suicided?) The phrase ‘Neron ieune’ in quatrain IX 53 may be differentiating between these two.

The Romans first created Germania (Inferior, Superior and Raetia) bounded by the Limes Germanicus fortifications but the Germanic tribes remained unsubdued. When Germanicus later went around to sort them out he had equally big problems with his own mutinous troops.

‘Aggripine’ may even have been an alternative placename, perhaps one cooked up (like ‘Gale’ in Line 4, probably intended for ‘Gaule’).

To be outrageous I suppose ‘ag’ could be derived from the OF verb ‘haïr’ or ‘hatjan’ (the ever-silent French ‘h’) meaning to be profoundly opposed to someone and wanting to hurt them, perhaps as in agitatingly aggressive, found in brigandage generally. OF ‘rapine’ certainly meant violent appropriation of another’s property or else the act of abduction. Is ‘Aggripine’ a Nostradamus wordplay, implying ‘ag-rapine’? (There have been several books written extensively on this puzzling Nostradamus wordgames subject including ‘The Nostradamus Code’ by David Ovason.)

Maybe that’s too far-fetched for modern tastes. Several Nostradamus researchers claim that this quatrain is about Hitler, the Second World War and Cologne in the Twentieth Century. But the OF noun ‘chef’ might equally well apply to a tribal chief of the Second Century BC or later.

Some way or other, quatrain III 53 may yet prove linked to “Le Neron ieune” in IX 53.

(There is an interesting webpage at about one Joos Kindt, which name seems curiously like ‘Jews Kind’ and who, it is stated, died at the stake in 1553. He seemed to know the Bible word-for-word and off-by-heart. My mother would say you can prove any theological viewpoint by quoting from the Bible somewhere. Another page, another human firestack?

Index number fans and librarians will spot that 1 and 5 and 3 appear in each of the quatrain designations above. Too imaginative? Imagination is a helpful means to an end and permits instant time and space travel but more importantly it can be an end in itself, a much down-played link with God that envisioned Michel de Nostredame prophetically: see the Preface to Cesar

to have that understanding through the seeing (text; d’œil) which is not by severing of the imaginative sense

(For myself, I found it best to supend all imagination for the while that I made wonderful but undeserved spiritual progress ‘around 1984’, thanks God.)

The accession to the throne of England by fanatical ‘Bloody Mary’ in 1553 was ushered-in by the beheading of her unwitting teenage competitor Lady Jane Gray. Roman Catholicism was against the wishes of Mary’s half-brother who proceeded her and her half-sister who succeeded her. During the intervening 5 years she had 280 non-Catholics burned to death at the stake. Because of centuries of bad press some spark decided recently to be more lenient with her story. Face it, please, she was a bloody tyrant like Nero. There have been a great many and there are more to come if we do not change the way that we cling to our external histories or how we choose who we push forward as ‘leaders’. (Be warned, human shields may backfire.) Seek inner development instead. We should not allow the morally weak and mal-empathetic to climb the greasy poles of graft, waving simplistic mottoes, merely to see their lackeys superciliously hand to us a small fraction of what was once our full share.
