A PRAGMATIC EPIGRAM THAT IS NOT TO HAVE ONLY ONE SENSE OR A SOLE SIGN : from the Epistle to the King

“… God will look at the long sterility of the great lady, who afterwards will then conceive two principal children:

At first sight, Catherine de Medicis appears to fit to this. She married in 1533 and first gave birth in 1544 Prince Francois became King of France and Princess Elizabeth, born 1545, became Queen of Spain. Three of Catherine’s sons did become kings (each one of France) yet the rest of the following prediction fails to fit to her family of ten children.

but she collapses, the female of which – affected by the temerity of the age – collapses as if dead in her eighteenth year, not being able to exceed her thirty-sixth year she will leave behind her three males, and a female, and in these will be two who have not at all the same father,

There are imperfect resemblances here to the Borgias, an ancient family with whom all Euro-royalty today has links. Rodrigo (Pope Alexander VI, whose mother was an Aragonais and father was a Cardinal) had, with a married mistress, three sons and a daughter (one third of his admitted output) upon whom he devoted much wealth of Italy, the Church and anything else he could plunder. The principal offspring were Cesare and Lucretia, who was fluent in Valencian. She died aged 39. Her daughter Leonora became a nun. Although they do not fit to the storyline here, their own family story is so redolent of this as to place this account by Nostredame firmly in Renaissance Italy. Or else some upcoming time of ruling families, vicious greed, political corruption, institutionalized debauchery in leading households, murders by frustrated satanists and fake papacy. Or it is purely allegorical.

of the three brothers there will be such differences and then links and accords such that three or four parts of Europe will tremble: the least in age will support and advance Christian Regnance: breeding doctrinal groups then abruptly subduing them, Arabs will retreat, Kingdoms unite, new Laws are enacted: of the other children the senior will wear the crown/the escutcheon of the fierce Lions holding out their paws ‘at the intrepid’.

The outstretched lions horizontal on the flags of British and other royalty are termed “passant”. Richard the Lionheart, though, had three with upraised paws. The funeral bier of Elizabeth I was accompanied by one dozen banners of her ancestors, each banner being ‘impaled’ (two flags per face) with heraldic lions grouped, either passant or standing upright, featured on every banner. Most every European Royal House has had heraldic lions passant/intrepid.

The next eldest, having the Romans/Lazios/Catholics for his company, makes a second journey shaking and raving to Mont-Louis (a fortified town in Southern France known as Montlluís to the Spanish) downhill and uphill over the Pyrenees, not negotiating an exchange like the monarchs of old, making the third inundation of human blood, for a long time Mars will not be in Caresme.

If Mars is March and not the troublesome planet-god then it might have made more sense to write that ‘for a long time Lent will not be in March’ unless this should be translated as ‘Mars will not be in Caresme for long’, so a time-marker of when Lent straddles two months. However, it was a familiar Medeval saying that something was as steady as ‘mars en Quaresme’ and so to be considered as wholly true or ‘une vérité entière’. (1389, ‘Viel Pelerin’, de Mesieres éd. Coopland)

As well as meaning Lent, a ‘Caresme des Femmes’ was a forty days term, as from the death of the husband, during which the Law would only assign any financial transfers to the widow, i.e. a legal quarantine of sorts. (The word ‘quarantine’ is basically the 40-day waiting period at Venice during plague times before the passengers could disembark from incoming boats.) Forty days has strong Biblical associations and is a meaningful number in zodiacal precession and astrological myth. Passing over Winter is the laborious task of each annual Sun, i.e. it needs must climb from around 16 degrees below the celestial equator for a forsaken forty degrees up to the Spring equinox about 24 degrees above the celestial equator and in this way, say some, the winter gloom is overcome by the young Sun’s constancy of purpose.

And the daughter will be given into the keeping of the Christian Church, falling for her Master into the paganic doctrines of the new heretics she will have two children. Of her two children, one will be faithful to the Catholic Church, the other a heretic according to the Catholic conformities.

And this other who has (shared) her great confusion and late repentance (yet) would ruin her, will have three extremely differing regions, to wit Italy, Germany, Spain, thereby to reinforce their particular partisanships by military means, going out from the 50th and the 52nd degree of latitude,

50th Parallel North; Brussels, Frankfurt, Krakow, Prague
52nd Parallel North; Birmingham, Berlin, The Hague, Warsaw

“Going out” seems somewhat ambiguous.

and all will render the homages of religions distant to the regions of Europe and the Seven Stars (Septrionalis) of the 48 degrees vertical,

Kuwait is at 48°North Longitude (Vienna is at 48°North Latitude). A meaningful dividing-up of 360° is used in the Zodiac to finely determine the bases for all astrological interpretations and supplying the 8°, 30°, 48°, 90° limits and others (e.g. Venus can be placed no further than 47° from the Sun.)

out of whom the weak by their deficiency shall tremble first, then the most Westernmost, Southernmost and Easternmost parts will tremble, such will be their power, whether or no that which will be from their hostile conquests is an ironclad harmony or an insuperable union.

Translation note: The text word ‘insuperable’ seems to be Anglo-Norman.

By nature they will be equals, but with great differences of faith. Following after this the unfruitful Dame (Royal Lady) of greater power than the second will be received by two peoples, by the first who are made obdurate by he who hath power over all, by the second and out of this the third which will have extended their forces against the system from Eastern Europe through the Pannonian states; there having overwhelmed and subjugated and by marine stealth will pursue his incursions to Trinacrie Adriatique by Mirmidon and the Germaniques all of which will succumb and become Barbarics with the whole of the Romance regions being greatly afflicted and purged.”

… from the EPISTLE TO THE KING

Out of interest, the 2 numbers mentioned (18 and 36) do relate as 3 x 6 = 18 with 36 as its double and they are each the number 9 numerologically (1+8 and 3+6) which of course divides evenly into both 18 and 36. (Also see the Article CYCLES NUMBERS SYMBOLS CHAINS AND LINKS TO NOSTRADAMUS) Were the numbers a simple clue or a convoluted one? Here’s a ‘Nostradamus factoid’:

God will look at the long sterility of the great lady, who afterwards will then conceive two principal children … at first this seems so biblical. The Bible says that John the Baptist was born almost miraculously to a revered old woman. Jesus was his truly miraculous cousin. By the old agrarian ways of the extended family they could have referred to one another happily as ‘brother’ even with that eccentric prophet and desert-dweller John being in such an elevated position in the eyes of the assembly where they were first to meet in public.

Or was Jesus one of a pair of twins, and could this have been concealed from us by some twist of the biblical record?

“These are the secret words which the living Jesus spoke, and which the twin, Judas Thomas, wrote down.” … from the Introduction to the Greek Gospel of Thomas also the Gospel According to Thomas at the Nag Hammadi Library

The learned Athenian Christian, Titus Flavius Clemens, Clement of Alexandria, died around 215AD in Jerusalem. He was aware of a ‘hidden’ aspect to Jesus Worship that was not available to non-initiates. His disciple Origen, a Founding Father of the Church, also knew it and parts of the NT make references to a real duality of ‘message’.

(Mark 4:11-12, Matthew 11:25-26 and 13:11-12, 1 Corinthians 4:1 and 2:6-8, Hebrews 5:11-14, Clement’s Outlines Book VI and Origen’s Contra Celsus VI-18)

‘Thunder Perfect Mind’ (found among Nag Hammadi’s lacunea copies of Early Second Century scripts from the Fourth Century) predates Nostradamus by a very long stretch indeed:

“For I am the first and the last. I am the honored one and the scorned one … I am the barren one, and many are her sons….”

Are we immersed here in vague symbolic language? Might this make the barren one the goddess of wisdom, Sophia? Or could this ‘great lady’ alternatively be called Judaism by any chance? Otherwise is ‘sterile’ an odd choice of term for the non-initiated?

The life of Jesus itself kicked-off several new movements and we can over-summarize somewhat by calling these;

the Peteresque-cum-Pauline confusion of Christianities which led-on to the Constantinian Roman Catholicism that provoked plural Reformation Christianities (while Constantinople’s Orthodox Christianity survived largely intact)

Early Jesus Worship or pre-Christianity which took many forms including the Thomasians in India,

Southern France’s pragmatic form of Jesus Worship that allowed inspired apostasies and was obliterated in a power and land grab by a wealth-seeking Crusade, spreading later to Northern Italy,

(see the Article NOSTRADAMUS RETROSPECTIVE ON THE ALBIGENSIAN CRUSADE)

Islamism that the devotees believe to have displaced prior revelations and disbars all subsequent ones.

(see the Article END-TIME NOSTRADAMUS SERIES (4) Q’RANIC CONCEPTS)

Are the two principal children of this lady John and Jesus? Judas Thomas and Jesus? Peter and Paul? Clement and Origen? Rome and Constantinople? Catholicism and Protestantism? Christianity and Islam?

Or was this ‘great lady’ Constantine’s beloved Mithraism that seemed to meld into Constantine’s militaristic Roman Catholicism and so is still ‘in the blood’ of the theoretically pacific yet perennially war-saluting Western Christianity?

Constantine had been the bemitred Pontiff of Mithras at Rome and handed down the pagan accoutrements to his newly commissioned state clergy of Christ. These are still maintained by the Papacy. (Perhaps equally curiously, the skullcap is worn in Vatican City).

This long-sterile ‘great lady’ and subsequent multiple child-birther is difficult to locate exactly in past European history. Joan of Portugal married at 16 to Henry the Impotent, King of Castille. After an attempt at artificial insemination to produce a legal heir, Joan produced a daughter who was said to be the image of a male courtier. Henry annulled the marriage and Joan then had two sons with another lover. She died in a convent aged 36. None of her children succeeded to the monarchy.

The phrase “two who have not at all the same father” could indicate adultery, illegitimacy, second marriage or whatever way that these children got separated out. For an off-court example, the first child of Catherine the Great of Russia is presumably not that of her husband as sex did not take place between them until a surgical intervention upon his body some years after.

of the three brothers there will be such differences and then links and accords such that three or four parts of Europe will tremble: the least in age will support and advance Christian Regnance: breeding doctrinal groups then abruptly subduing them, Arabs will retreat, Kingdoms unite, new Laws are enacted: of the other children the senior will wear the crown/the escutcheon of the fierce Lions holding out their paws ‘at the intrepid’.

The youngest of this group sustains something like the Holy Roman Empire or else inherits some monarchy that figureheads a state-authorized religion. Political/intellectual bodies are promoted then promptly put down again (suggesting strong and efficient controls including over opinion-making). If we add this to the notion expressed later-on in the text that the daughter’s son becomes notably powerful like his uncles, then we find all ways to our understanding are blocked as nothing that fits exactly to this has happened so far.

Yet by a small flight of imagination we can envisage that Nostredame was possibly confusing or else deliberately obfuscating history. Would a daughter given in devotion to the Church be likely to mother a powerful prince? Instead, could there have been two sons, two daughters and a grandson involved here?

Should we once consider this lady as being Princess Leonor (Eleanor of Aragon, younger sister of Blanche II) then we must eliminate five of the nine children she birthed. This is possible. Four never reached adulthood and her youngest, the aforementioned Joan of Portugal, was a Medeval female royal of some waywardness who disgraced her perilous alliance to an impotent king then died young after birthing three illegitimate children by two unmarried fathers. The other children were;

Alfonso V of Portugal, d.1481, who became King of Portugal. The country prospered under him but was not peaceful as he framed laws that provoked his most powerful nobles. He campaigned in North Africa. His daughter, the so-called Blessed Princess Saint Joanna, was permanently resident at a convent.

Princess Catherine, d.1463, who was a celebrated nun and morality writer.

Princess Leonor, d.1467, mother of Maximilian I the Holy Roman Emperor.

Some of Leonor’s children were born or conceived soon after the death of an infant sibling. (Prince John had died in August and then Ferdinand was born November 1433,. Princess Philippa died 24th March and then Joanna was born 31st March 1439.) It is perhaps problematic to consider Leonor as of long sterility but some terms had quite different meanings back then. For a loose example ‘adultery’ as used by Michel Nostredame usually conveyed corruption rather than marital infidelity and ‘climate’ could mean region. Leonor did not marry until 26 years old and that could well be what is meant. Her last child was conceived when she was 36. Her husband then died in the Templar city of Tomar when she was less than two months pregnant.

Ferdinand, d.1470, master of the Order of Aziz and father of King Manuel I of Portugal, was a frustrated adventurer whose brother the King finally allowed him to participate in two military expeditions to North Africa. He inherited the title Duke of Viseu and responsibilty for ‘the Discoveries’ from his uncle, Prince Henry the Navigator.

Solely linear studies of history might be a mistake, in my opinion. Nostredame was envisioning historic events both past and future, making revelations about both so as to complete his great work, and why not? It is argued that one of his quatrains could cover more than one event in time. As Astrology is inherently cyclical this makes some sense to natural astrologers.

And the daughter will be given into the keeping of the Christian Church, falling for her Master into the paganic doctrines of the new heretics she will have two children. Of her two children, one will be faithful to the Catholic Church, the other a heretic according to the Catholic conformities.

If the Catholic Church be the prime judge of faithfulness then this figurative biasing would appear to be about two religious groups, one being considered true and the other an apparent apostasy.

And this other who has (shared) her great confusion and late repentance (yet) would ruin her, will have three extremely differing regions, to wit Italy, Germany, Spain, thereby to reinforce their particular partisanships by military means, going out from the 50th and the 52nd degree of latitude,

This would fit to HRE Charles V. His mother was Joan of Castille (as opposed to Joan of Portugal) known better as Joan the Mad. This Joan/Juana was the daughter of Ferdinand II King of Aragon who had her locked away in a tower in 1507. On the King’s death in 1516 her son Charles V came to Spain and claimed his inheritance. However, he did not release his mother and she remained locked away until her death in 1555. It is no more than reasonable that Emperor Charles may have regretted later a harsh course of action regarding his mother that in part benefited himself.

Upon the death of her mother Isabella of Castile, in November 1504, Juana became Queen regnant of Castile and her husband Philip the Handsome became the King de jure uxoris so desposing Ferdinand her father who set about minting Castilian coins in the joint name of Ferdinand and Juana the King and Queen of Castile and Léon and Aragon. At the beginning of 1505, persuading superior powers that Juana was too unstable to govern, Ferdinand became the administrator-governor of the kingdom of Castile.

Philip then kept his hand in the rulership game by minting coins in the joint name of Philip and Juana the King and Queen of Castile and Léon and Archdukes of Austria (they were both conjointly). Ferdinand married Germaine de Foix (see the Nostradamus Quatrain ‘II 53 The Great Lady Who Would Not Relinquish Her Governance Over Her Territory’) the niece of Louis XII of France, aiming for a son who could inherit Aragon and possibly Castile too but this move simply strengthened popular support for Philip and Juana in Castile. By the end of 1505 Philip and Juana sailed together to Castile, surviving a shipwreck that made them the guests in England of King Henry VII. They finally reached their rightful land in late Spring 1506 whereupon the entire nobility offered their allegiance. Philip took the reigns but after crude trickery father-in-law Ferdinand who had passed-over Castile with his blessings to his ‘children’ was left with some rights of recovery which nevertheless he contented himself with and withdrew to his own country of Aragon.

This passage – including the competing currencies – can look a bit like the present EU or some upcoming version of it. (Just imagine Ferdinand having one eye on becoming a leading candidate for the unelected King of Europe and not making his own land the central matter in his decision-making.) One intended fate of the EU is that its knowingly improbable Euro-currency (with each member country ploughing its own national debt) must prove unsustainable and fail dramatically so forcing many rigidly separate porcupine-quilled cultures to pull together in one replete political form, ripening as a mega-region suitable for global governance.

What of the new motherland Europa’s two principal children? France might take a group under its leadership but probably Germany will have its own following of economically collapsed states that it rescues at its own workers future expense (extending to its sibling Austria) being the inter-related economies around. Who may save Portugal, Italy, Greece, Spain and troubled little Ireland (all earmarked for certain depressions) from their faux-economics exhaustion? Protesting Germany which may be able to afford it or internationalized France that may not? Banker’s Britain sits on the edge like an Americanized thumb in the European palette of oil colours. Do you think they should all cock a snook at the international bankers who lent previously non-existent money digitally to countries whose denizens didn’t see any of it and then imposed austerity and security programmes on them as if they were still struggling their way through the Second World War?

“ … leaders of today’s Europe are shallow, cloistered people, preoccupied with their local politics and unequipped, morally or intellectually, to cope with a continental problem. This is true of Angela Merkel in Germany, of François Hollande in France, and it is true also of Christine Lagarde at the IMF.”

J.K. Galbraith, via http://www.moonofalabama.org (“Greece: Sane Voices …”)

Well it seems to me that the politicos no longer work directly for the people anyways, so ….

… all in all, we seem to be contemplating simultaneously the past and the future of the Western Empire/Western Europe and the Eastern Euro Zone too including a mighty division or two now in sight, both at the root and the branch.

Some of this instability may come from incursions of some previously remote faiths hence

the homages of religions distant to the regions of Europe and the Seven Stars (the North)

which could mean anything from intensified conflicts between those religions that are ‘mutuellement fausse’,

(see the Articles FUTURE ARAB ATTACKS ON FRENCH SOIL and END-TIME NOSTRADAMUS SERIES (4) Q’RANIC CONCEPTS)

to the dispacement of all the faiths by something new.
